Issue 3/2007 of the Art Studies Quarterly is dedicated to monuments of Early Mediaeval Eurasia.
Bulgarian Horse Amulets in a Eurasian Context, Khazarian Miniatures, Epiphenomenal Light in Byzantine Painting, The Image of the Gorgon Medusa in Bulgarian Lands During the Early Middle Ages – these are just some of the articles published in the new, 3rd issue of Art Studies Quarterly. The majority of texts focus on new art finds from the Early Middle Ages (Khazar, Byzantium). They attempt to offer a new point of view and interpretation of monuments of the Eurasian nomad world.
The time of the Great Migration did not end untill the 13 centur in the steppes of Eurasia. The instability of the historic and cultural situation did not support the creation of tradition and styles that can be compared with the high achievements of steppe art in Eurasia.
Vladimir Petruhin, Rasho Rashev, Vjacheslav Glebov and Aleksej Ivanov, Viktor Chaidze, Valentina Flyorova, Emma Zilivinskaya, Natalia FonyakovaDaniel Fokas, Vanya Pavlova, Alexander Stoykov are the authors of the articles, some are in the original Russian version. Two reviews are published: by Elka Bakalova – Respect for Icons in Medieval Russian Art and by Olga Todorova – The Birth of Modern Privacy. Both have an English summary.
The magazine is a quarterly publication on theory, history and criticism of art and is a publication of the Institute of Art Studies. The present issue of Art Studies Quarterly was published with the financial support of the Scientific Research Fund of the Ministry of Education and Science.
