On November 14, 2007 at the Press conference hall of Sofia Press the Union of Bulgarian Journalists (UBJ) presented its annual awards. In the ‘Books’ category the Bronze Statuette was presented to Petar Kardzhilov for his book ’The Enigmas of the Film the Balkan War’, published by Publishing House ‘Titra”. Petar Ivanov Kardzhilov has an MA in Film Studies (he has graduated the NATFA ‘Krastio Sarafov’), he is also a journalist and writer. He has worked in two of the most authoritative audiovisual archives in our country – Bulgarian National Cinematheque (1980-1990) and Department Television Archive at Bulgarian National Television (1998-2002). He has specialized in the research of history of Bulgarian cinema and is the author of numerous important academic publications dealing with the early period of Bulgarian cinema – the beginning of film distribution and film production, the first steps of film advertising, the documentary-archive production stockholder company ‘Luna’ (1919-1923), the popular articles about the Scholl Cinematograph of the 20s and 30s, the unrealized Bulgarian films (the so called “phantom films”) and the “divided films” (feature films shot between 1944 and 1948). He has been consultant to the feature film ‘Kmete, kmete’ (Mayor, mayor), of dozens of documentary films, of TV programs and books dedicated to film history. Thanks to his research the date of the founding of the Union of Bulgarian Filmmakers (UBF) has been established. Kardzhilov is a long-time member of the union.
He is one of the editors (together with G. Gencheva and R. Avramov) of the catalogue ‘Bulgarian Films with Awards. 1944-1980’ (1980), author of the illustrated filmography ‘Bulgarian Feature Films. Volume I. 1915-1948’ (1987). He has taken part also in the preparation of the authoritative encyclopedia ‘Bulgarian Cinema.
A-ß.’ (2000), editor of the manual of BNTV ‘The Serial. Part I. 1966-2000’ (2001). Since 1999 he is member of the Study Commission at IFTA. Has made numerous presentations at international seminars, in 2000 at the General Assembly of the Federation he was elected as member of the Executive Board of IFTA.
At present Kardzhilov is working on his doctorate thesis ‘The film the Balkan War in the history of Bulgarian cinema’ in the Department of Screen Arts at the Institute of Art Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
