Bulgarian Musical Theatre, vol. 4 released. Authors: Rosalia Bix, Anelia Yaneva, Rumiana Karakostova, Miglena Tsenova-Nusheva, Emilia Zhunich

The last, vol. 4 of the Musical Theatre series launched in 1995 by a research team of the Institute of Art Studies, BAS was conceptualised as a first attempt at a survey research on the publications on opera, ballet, operetta and musical in specialized periodicals in Bulgaria over a period of 12 decades. The series focused on particular opinions of an impressive number of authors (not necessarily reviewers and musicologists), who had succeeded in convincingly highlight both the creative achievements in opera, ballet, operetta and musical productions in Bulgaria and the problems facing Bulgarian musical theatre as a whole.
Some of the productions, representative of these genres, are thoroughly analysed using the authors’ texts: 49 operas, 45 ballets, 35 operettas and 26 musicals, the staging of which has contributed to the professional development of the companies and to the shaping of an overall character of the music-theatrical repertoire in Bulgaria.
Having the idea to preserve the information about the reviews, articles, critical materials, releases, festschrifts and studies on local lore written between 1890 and 2010, this edition seeks to highlight the process of development, establishment and the public response to these genres in Bulgarian within the chronological framework of three centuries.
