The exhibition ‘210th Anniversary of the Birth of Dimitar Zograf from Samokov was open at the Crypt of the church ‘St. Alexander Nevski’
The event has been organized by the National Museum of Bulgarian Fine Art and the Institute of Art Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences with the blessing of His Grace the Bishop Nikolay of Plovdiv.
The organizers had the idea to present the works of this icon-painter from the city of Samokov, almost unknown up to know because he was always left in the shadow of his more famous brother Zaharii Zograf. Possibly this is due to the fact, that Dimitar in all of his creative work stays true to the orthodox church style of painting – highly praised by the monks from Sveta Gora Monastery. And he was invited to personally paint the murals in the narthex of the Great Monastery ‘St. Athanasius’ in Sveta Gora, Aton.
Dimitar Zograf has left a great number of paintings all over the country, many of them are unknown as part of our cultural heritage from the time of the Bulgarian Revival. Almost all of the icons of the icon-painter are in use by the church and only a few of them are in museum expositions. Regional and city museums, art galleries, the National Historical Museum, the Historical Museum of Sofia, the National Church Historical-Archaeological Museum, the Plovdiv, Pleven and Vidin Bishoprics, private collectors took part in the exhibition.
Parallel there are being exposed also icons painted by the founder of the Samokov School of Painting – Hristo Dimitrov, father of Dimitar Zograf as well as by his younger son Zaharii Zograf. Presented also are works by Ioan Ikonopisetz and Kostadin Valiov, disciples of Hristo Dimitrov.
With a selection of drawings and sketches from the archive of Zaharii Zograf an attempt has been made to show the models used by the icon-painters of the school.
The exhibition will be open till August 31.
Curators are Mariela Staikova – NMBII and Ass. Prof. Elena Genova, PhD from the Institute of Art Studies at BAS.
