The book by Prof. Milena Georgieva deals with this country’s great artist Ivan Penkov (1897–1957) and is the first contemporary study of his life and career. His are the emblematic stained glass windows and mosaics at the University of Sofia, the Palace of Justice, the Central Bank, etc. His famous Themis has been used as a logo of a number of TV shows.
A painter and set designer; decorator and applied artist; professor at the National Academy of Art, Sofia; curator of large exhibitions abroad, he has left behind magnificent work in all genres and forms of art, which, unfortunately, remains unknown to the general public.
The book combines a monographic study with research on marginal artefacts seeking to reconstruct a vision of artist Ivan Penkov through texts, memoirs, artworks, etc., of his life and career and put into scientific circulation unknown aspects of his biography; to delve deep into the creative ideas of the age he lived in; to examine a new aspect of his work: two bohemian albums, which have miraculously survived in his personal archives, revealing an unfamiliar Ivan Penkov. They shed bright light on an unexamined for the time being periods of his life: his youth in Munich while he studied further at the Academy of Fine Arts (1922–1923) and his mature years (1939–1957), in his heyday.
Conclusions are drawn pertaining to the role and significance of cafés to Bulgarian culture; to the presence of café societies in it and production of new material related to such journalistic genres as cartoons, satirical drawings, caricatures. The response of Bulgarian artists to political regime changes is explored as well as their opportunities to come into touch with traditions and modern art. The book contains culturological observations, presenting different points of view of the bohemian life-work phenomenon and eventually, presents Ivan Penkov both as an artists and as a person: an ingenious man with outstanding contribution to Bulgarian culture.
The book is published with the support of Bulgarian National Science Fund, Ministry of Education, Youth and Science.
