Emerging as a marginal practice, blues has become one of the main paradigms in the modern world. Yet can we take the blues as a general metaphor? Can we recognize in it a key concept in order to understand musical phenomena that – even though being elusive and changeable – sustain a relatively common stylistic notion and oppose, on different levels, hegemonies of modernity? And why to do so while the rational man of modernity seems to be attached rather to the realm of narrowly specialized, fragmented knowledge?.. Employing advanced theories on the topic, “Dialogical Music” goes further to discuss questions of more general relevance and to interpret the role of African-American tradition not just for the sake of its significant influence on global popular music developments during the 20th century but also to unfold the notion of ethnic otherness and that particular cultural logic which has undermined the rational hegemonies of modernity and stimulated pluralistic conceptualisations on meanings and values of music in the modern world.
